Web sales up 29% at Marks & Spencer

Marks and Spencer reports online sales during the first six months of the year rose by 29%. Traffic to the retailer’s web site jumped by 30% during the 26 weeks to 26 September 2009, following the site’s relaunch last month. Marks and Spencer said its share of the online clothing market has increased from 4.2% to 4.8%. Total profit before tax during the period was up to £298.3 million, from £297.8 million last year. Sales increased by 2.8% to £4.3 billion.

M&S chairman Stuart Rose said, “We continue to focus on providing better-than-ever value for our customers for the all-important Christmas period and into 2010. In the longer term we have clear plans to deliver sustainable growth by driving international and multi-channel sales, supported by the rollout of new supply chain and systems platforms. Our positive cashflow and financial position gives us the capacity to implement our plans.”

M&S also revealed it will start selling 400 branded products such as Kellogg’s, Heinz and Coca-Cola, across its stores following a 16-month trial.
