Delivery firms to introduce contingency plans during Olympics
With just 100 days to go until the opening of the London Olympics, UK parcel delivery companies are preparing for the major challenges that are expected due to traffic flow issues that threaten disruption to delivery services in London. Many delivery firms are expected to apply additional surcharges to cover the disruption to their normal operations during July and August.
Delivery companies including DPD, Yodel, Hermes and City Link are introducing contingency plans during the Olympics, with some adding additional staff to complete journeys on foot, if necessary. Leeds-based Hermes said that up to 10,000 individual parcel deliveries could be affected each day during the Olympics.
Andrew Starkey, Head of e-Logistics at IMRG said: “Carriers are working as hard as they can to prevent any delays to deliveries in the areas effected but there is bound to be an impact. Retailers will need to manage their customer expectations carefully during this summer”
Over the past year delivery companies have been coordinating with officials from the Olympics organizing committee and Transport for London (TFL) to assess the challenges expected during the event. TFL has designed a special 109-mile “Olympic Route Network” and “Paralympic Route Network” to allow participants to travel efficiently between event venues. Each network is expected to cover 2.6% of London’s roads, adding a wide range of waiting restrictions, checkpoints and traffic flow modifications.
